Future Focussed Initial Teacher Education
We have the mandate to build professional teaching practice so that every education professional embraces improvement, innovation, and change. We need to fundamentally redesign how we recruit, select and educate teachers as we prepare for the future of learning. We need to reconceive how we support the ongoing development of our profession so we can adapt and respond to the demands of a rapidly changing world.
We released our paper Strategic Options for developing Future Orientated Initial Teacher Education in mid-2016. This paper pulls together the results of earlier consultation with our profession on ITE. As a result of this, we produced our Action Plan that identifies areas of focus and which was endorsed by key sector representatives.
We are now talking to ITE providers and sector representatives about proposed changes to future ITE programmes so we can shape the future together. Our proposals include:
- lifting to a level 8 qualification as the new benchmark for entry to the profession
- introducing a national literacy and numeracy benchmark
- strengthening practica - including an extended placement in the final year of study, and
- flexible pathways that enable teachers to teach across sector levels e.g. 0 to 8 years.
