Tātaiako: Cultural Competencies for Teachers of Māori Learners

Tātaiako is a resource explaining competencies teachers need to develop so they can help Māori learners achieve educationally as Māori. It was developed by the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Council and a reference group of academics, teacher education practitioners and iwi representatives involved in iwi educational initiatives. Read more and access resources

Māori Medium Research

Learning to teach

The Learning to Teach research programme was commissioned to provide a broader and more in-depth evidence base for the development of policies and advice to schools, kura, early childhood centres, initial teacher education providers, PRTs themselves and others in the education community who have a role in the support and professional education of newly qualified teachers. Read more

Practising Teacher Criteria

The Practising Teacher Criteria were developed with significant input from the sector. The Practising Teacher Criteria were designed to be more relevant to teachers in all education settings in New Zealand, and to provide a more rigorous description of quality teaching than the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions. Read more about this project

Standards for teaching

This literature review examines the theories behind teaching standards and how they apply to professional teaching practice. The report contributed to the development of new teaching standards – the Registered Teacher Criteria (now Practising Teacher Criteria). Status of teachers and teaching

The Teachers Council worked with the Ministry of Education on a research project that investigated the status of teachers in New Zealand and implications for recruitment, retention and professionalisation of teachers. Research was commissioned to provide an evidence base for policy development and benchmarks for ongoing monitoring. Three reports were completed, two of which were published. The first report, Identifying Teacher Status, Its Impact and Recent Teacher Status Initiatives, is available on request.
