This page is a resource for kaiako and pouako in Māori medium settings, including Kura Kaupapa Māori, Kohanga Reo and Puna Reo. It also includes research projects related to Māori medium settings, and mentoring opportunities for new teachers.

The Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand

The Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is the professional and regulatory body for all registered teachers, including those working in Māori medium settings in early childhood education, schools and other related education institutions in New Zealand.

The Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand aims to support the professional status of teachers and high quality teaching and learning through its mandated functions.

The Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand:

  • certificates eligible teachers, including those in kohungahunga, puna reo, kohanga reo, kura kaupapa, kura a iwi, wharekura, wānanga, kura auraki and rūmaki in English medium schools
  • engages in research and other professional projects to support the teaching profession
  • supports the maintenance of professional standards through competence and conduct processes and judicial bodies
  • approves programmes for Initial Teacher Education.

As a teacher in a Māori medium setting, you are key to keeping te reo Māori alive in Aotearoa. The Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand supports both you and the wishes and aspirations of those whānau, hapu and iwi Māori who want their tamariki and mokopuna to experience quality learning through the language of their tupuna.

Whakamanahia Te Reo Māori

He Tirohanga Hōtaka research project

The New Zealand Teachers Council undertook research in 2008 to investigate issues in the initial teacher education (ITE) programmes that prepare teachers for Māori medium settings in schools and early childhood education.

The resulting report, by Haemata Ltd, involved an environmental scan of Māori medium ITE programmes. The report was launched in 2008 by the Teachers Council with a hui of ITE educators and others with an interest in quality provision of ITE programmes for kaiako in Māori medium settings. Key findings of the research highlight a range of practices and issues around establishing and developing te reo proficiency while preparing students for teaching in Māori medium settings.

Kura Kaupapa Māori phone survey

In 2006, the Council conducted a phone survey of Tumuaki of a sample of Kura Kauapapa Māori to investigate issues relating to registration of pouako. Read the results (PDF, 440KB)

Induction and Mentoring of Provisionally Registered Pouako

A resource to help teachers working in Māori medium settings was developed by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi as part of the Council's Induction and Mentoring Pilot Programme.
